Recommended badge active Recommended "Wonderful customer service by a knowledgeable staff" They are the only place i trust to take my 2016 work van to. They dont oversell the maintenance like the wallet flush bay at the dealer. Just good honest advice that is in kine with how i drive and use my vehicle that is inline with what you read in the owners manual. Contrary to what some people may think the service bay at a dealership does not follow tue actual "OEM" reccomendations.

"Fantastic " I was stranded in the middle of 28th Street at 3:30 on a weekday afternoon. I called for a tow and had the vehicle taken directly to O'Neill's. They put the vehicle inside their garage and said they'd have an estimate the following morning, which they did. Vehicle had sustained front end suspension problems. Gave them the go ahead and by 5:30 that day repairs were completed.

"Fixed my AC at a reasonable price" Brought my 2012 Honda Pilot in to fix A/c. Dealership wanted over $1200 to fix on a 14 year old car. O'neill's found a way to make the repair for 1/3 the price. It took a couple of days to get the parts but they did not keep m,y car during the wait. I drove it around and then brought in back in. Once parts were received they were done in 1/2 da and I got the car back. Definitely asking them to estimate on the next job.

"Mediocre Experience" As far as I can tell, the mechanic/technician did a good job and the repair was done correctly. What went poorly was everything else. First I was told I'd get the car either Thursday or Friday, which didn't happen. Then I was told Monday morning. Then it was Monday afternoon. Then it was Tuesday between 2-4p. I had to call for the update at 4p Tuesday to find out it was going to be Wednesday after 1p. Poor managing or knowledge of managing expectations. In addition to that, they billed me incorrectly at first and had to rerun my credit card for an extra $500 when the mistake was found. That's a punch in the gut.

"Great Service!" Tom and all the guys at O'neills are just fantastic. I can't say enough good things about them. They recently helped me out big time with both of my cars. While the dealership was trying to sell me a trans O'neills figured out exactly what was going on and it ended up I didn't need a new transmission and the repair was simple and inexpensive. On my other car I stopped in to have the timing belt done and they did a fantastic job as usually. Unfortunately a bolt has been incorrectly installed by the last group that had done the timing belt. O'neills put in the extra work to make everything right and still met the original estimate. I have delt with O'neils several times over the last 5 years and every time has been a great experience. They are clearly one of, if not the best garage in Grand Rapids.

"Power Issues " A friend noticed my rear wheels weren't spinning on my Subaru Legacy. Due to its semetric AWD, there should never be a time when it doest. I took it to O'Neill's and the were able to fix he initial issue without running diagnostic. However they found several other issues that needed emendate attention. When any issue was found, or repair was needed, the called me to fully and clearly explain the issue on how it would need to be fixed. The service was fast, friendly, and professional. I refer anyone looking for a great shop." 2 years ago I was looking for a new shop that I could really trust and I found it with O'Neill's. They go above and beyond every time I need them. My power steering pump was on its way out and I had a scheduled appointment for the Tuesday after Christmas but the pump died the Monday prior to Christmas. I was fully expecting my Jeep to sit there for a week and I would have the extra expense of a rental. The flat bed hauled my Jeep in and Tom told me I know you really need it for Christmas trips so we will get it done today. I was very surprised and extremely happy. If you are looking for a shop that has YOUR best interest in mind O'Neill's is the place to go.

"Quieting the Beast" My beloved Astro van had a nasty deafening noise coming from the rear end. After a trip ti O'Neill's we discovered that it needed a rear differential overhaul. After a few days of pacing the lobby I have Big Blue back and she's "quiet as a church mouse" (from Tom himself). "Rear differential rebuild " I took my car in for service a few days before thanksgiving. I told the folks I was hoping to get the car fixed in time so I could drive for the holiday to see my family. They called me Monday morning two hours after opening with a full diagnosis and it was detailed and explained part by part. I was informed daily via phone calls and text messages with pictures of findings. The quote was spot on accurate after the work. The work was done when it was promised and it was a huge job. The car drives like brand new. They were courteous, informative and the best car repair I've had done at a shop. I'd take my car here for any repair. The people there make this place great

"Friendly, Helpful, Honest" Had my truck towed in (transmission had failed while driving and it would no longer go into gear). After discussing symptoms, Tom (the manager) went over potential trouble areas with me, and explained exactly what work would need to be performed in order to diagnose the actual cause of the problem, as well as the cost for removal, disassembly, and diagnosis. He also gave me a rough "worst case scenario" estimate. I went ahead and authorized them to do the diagnosis work.  The next day he called me with "good" news. The problem was just a bad torque converter and leaky front seal on the transmission, and the repairs cost ended up being nearly $1500 LESS than I had feared.  After getting the truck back it runs like brand new.  Transmission repair can be really, really expensive; it is good to have a shop I know I can trust.

"Friendly, Reasonably Priced" Fairly new to Grand Rapids area so when I had a problem, I asked around and O'Neill's was highly recommended. I was a little hesitant because they are about 25miles away and the van had to be towed there. When I called, Tom let me know they would do an initial diagnostic inspection and what the cost would be for that and then gave best/worst case scenario of cost which I appreciated. I was thinking the worst would be I'd need a rebuilt transmission, but even if that, Tom said the fairly low mileage for the age of my Odyssee, it would be worth the expense to repair. ("It's barely broken in!") That was actually reassuring because it's an 04 and I wasn't sure if it was a smart move to put that much into an older van! While doing diagnostics, they found the problem was not the transmission, but electrical! A mouse had chewed some wires! They replaced those and test drove the van and no further problems! I was so thankful to see my final bill and the amazing thing was HALF of my bill was for the towing service (not related to O'Neills, we just had them add it to the bill because I didn't have any way to pay at time of towing!) So I would say their fees were VERY reasonable!  I asked if they did other services or only transmissions and he said they do just about everything except air conditioning, so even tho there are closer places, I will be taking my vehicles there for all future repairs!

"Honest" I brought my VW Jetta VR6 there because it seemed like it was having transmission issues, slipping and slamming into gear. They diagnosed my car and told me there was not 1 thing wrong with my transmission, it was my engine. What felt like transmission slips and slamming of gears was actually a broken engine mount so it was moving with the engine torque. We had been ignoring the check engine light because we were told it was the Mass Air Flow sensor, but they gave us a read out of all the engine codes and Mass Air Flow sensor was not on it. My husband will be able to work through the list and get my car running like new again. I would recommend them to any one that asks because it's hard to find honest mechanics.

While I thought sure I was going to need a $3000 transmission, Shaun Oneill diagnosed it as a bad u joint, a $100 repair. Very clean and professional shop. Friendly staff, I was made to feel welcome from my very first phone call to the time I walked in the door. Tom the service writer is great, Shaun Oneill knows his stuff. "Corrected the problem that another shop caused!" Warning buyers beware!  I had my transmission fluid changed at ed kohen in Greenville this last December. It cost me $150. About a couple months later I noticed the car shifting differently, but by that time it was motorcycle season so the car was parked basically from the spring till now. I started driving my car to work starting last week when it was raining all week. With in that week the car went from shifting hard to the hesitating to the point of not wanting to shift at all.  I dropped the car off at O'niels transmission service in cascade off of old 28th st. I brought my car to O'Neill's because of all the positive reviews and all the advertising that they do they have been in business since 1960 and know what they are doing. In fact they know what they are doing so much to where they teach other transmission shops of the techniques they use because they're so effective.  I was hoping and praying that I did not need a new transmission! So I dropped my car off over night they called me the next morning and told me that ed kohen put the wrong transmission fluid in my car, even though they billed me for the correct transmission fluid LV Mercon.  Needless to say $400 later, new corrrect transmission fluid and a PCM reboot my car is driving flawlessly as it has always done before.  I HIGHLY RECOMMEND O'NEILL'S

"New car jitters" Bought a new to me Odyssey and soon began to feel what I described as a flutter while driving at highway speeds. I was certain that I had bought a car with a transmission that was failing and brought it to O'Neil's to discover the extend of the problem. After checking out the car they told me that the issues was not the transmission but the engine going into Eco mode to save gas. A good thing that I did not know I had. "Friendly & quality service" Four months after buying our 2008 Acadia, the tranny went out. I called 3 or 4 different tranny places and got somewhat similar price quotes. But what I liked most about Oneils is I could get a warranty & also Tom at the desk was very accommodating, friendly & talked to me like a real person not just an invoice number. He explained everything and gave us a few options. Tranny work can be expensive but I believe you get what you pay for. We left Oneils feeling confident with the quality of work we received & the warranty that backs it up.

Thanks for the review Tom. As always, we appreciate your buisness and input.  We definitley strive to meet our customers needs, and our goals.   Having to wait for parts can take time, and isn't always a factor we can control. On your vehicle, we had the rear brake components here (as requested). Upon inspeciton we found an alternate repair neccessary. Other repairs factored into this as well, but were not the cause for your later completion time.

"Great customer service no matter what the situation." I had a blown out torque converter which in consequently burned up my transmission so I called O'Neill's and they gave me options and a recommendation. They got it done very efficiently and always explained to me exactly what they happened and how they are fixing it. They even took me back into the shop to show me the parts that went bad. When my new torque converter failed due to a fluke malfunction, I brought it right back to them and they had it on a hoist within the hour. They even had a rental car for me when they had to keep my truck for a couple days. I have all the confidence in the world that the warranty they provided me with will keep me in good hands and even after it's up, I will still come back to them and recommend them to friends/family.

"Honest, trustworthy" I've been here twice. The first time, I was told that my van's transmission was in need of repair (and more information about how transmissions work than I will ever remember). It needed several other repairs, and they were willing to work within my available budget to do the most urgent repairs. Because of the age and condition of the vehicle, we decided not to do the repairs, and they were proved right when the transmission failed several months later. Once we replaced that vehicle, I was surprised to find that the newer van felt like it had some transmission issues, as well. I brought it in to be sure. They test drove it and looked for the issues that I had described. I have a warranty, so I was ready to go ahead with repairs. However, they said that my transmission was working fine, told me that some of the things I was experiencing were normal for this particular vehicle's transmission, and that the road conditions, combined with tired that needed to be replaced, were likely responsible for some of the other issues. "Honest. Understanding of customers having a bad car day." These guys are the best. They are the only place I will take my car for anything it needs. These guys won't try to sell you what you don't need. They explain in a clear way what codes your car gave and what they mean. They take the time to listen to you and your car. The best thing they did was to give me options that would best work for me at the time. No scare tactics, no pushing for me to do more then I could at the time. That kind of honesty and respect is hard to find these days.

"Knowledgable " I brought my Honda Odyssey in, we'll aware of most all it's mechanical problems, & wanted a rough estimate on a transmission for my model & year. The tech spent some time reading all the check engine light codes, & spent time talking about much less than my transmission, that needed to be done. I was told the quote would be between $25-50. They charges me $40, for what I feel was everything else he told me. Since I came in with the knowledge already, I would have preferred to pay the $25 for the quote on the transmission I asked for. I felt my time was ignored, & I was overcharged.

Please allow me to give you some background, and our objective in these situations.  If then, you still feel short changed we will refund you the difference.  Modern transmissions are electrically controlled, and require us to read codes for a starting point in diagnostics. Many engine sensors, and mechanical problems can effect transmission function.  We feel that our typical customer wants to know as much about all mechanical problems that we can observe so that they can make sound repair decisions. We are not just a transmission specialty shop. We are well equipped and trained in all aspects of your vehicle.  If in our process, you received diagnostic information that you already posessed, please don't consider it an attempt to just sell you more.  We simply want informed customers.  Charging for this initial diagnostics is actually new for us. I had to start this because much of Shaun's days were spent diagnosing work that we did not sell repairs on, and he is our highest paid tech.  I sincerely want a positive experience for all of my customers, and appreciate your feedback. "Prompt Service" We took our vehicle in for a transmission shift problem. Tom and his crew did an inspection and found nothing that deemed immediate service, they did some service bulletin recommendations and the problem has yet to reappear.  Honesty is a hard virtue to find these days and as an old service adviser myself skepticism comes natural to me. He did not try to sell me nothing I did need even though I was anticipating a new transmission and the cost with it. I was so elated I had them replace all four struts and an alignment. "Charged more than what was initially quoted." The first time I went in to get a quote on the repair, I was given around an $80 price for the part and another $65 for service. I had access to the part already and asked to have them replace my broken part with the one I already had, assuming that the service charge would stay the same. But AFTER replacing the O2 sensor, I was asked to pay $90. $20 didn't seem like a big enough deal to question it at the time, but the more I thought about it, the more bitter of a taste it left in my mouth. It just feels like I got swindled out of some money a bit and it saddens me because my car seems to be fixed and the overall experience other than that was ok. If someone were to ask me if I recommend this place, I wouldn't be able to tell them without mentioning that they are dishonest about pricing their services.

"Saved Me From Dealer Pressure" My local mechanics heard a noise in the transmission of a used car my son was looking at I took it to the experts at O'Neill's and they took me on a walk-in basis, test drove the car, found the pinion gear the issue and gave me a written report. I showed the report to the dealer and I offered to reduce the purchase price to cover the needed repair. The dealer dropped us and looked for some new unsuspecting buyer. Oneill's is the best in Grand Rapids. I've used them three times and they have always been professional and responsive.
